What is email marketing and why does it still lead on returns
It was written off as dead, yet it is one of the most profitable channels available. Email marketing means speaking directly to someone who has already given you permission, with no algorithms in between. But everything depends on one thing: whether they open the email. And the subject line decides that. Try it below.
email marketing means sending emails to a list of contacts who have given you permission, to inform, sell or build loyalty. Its great advantage: it is a channel you own (you do not depend on any network’s algorithm) and one of those delivering the best return per euro invested. But it only works if people open your email, and almost all of that comes down to the subject line. That is why there is an analyser below to score yours. In fact, industry studies put its return at around €36 for every euro invested (Litmus), more than any other channel.
Before the theory, something practical. The subject line is the door: if it is not good, what is inside does not matter because nobody reads it. Write the subject line of your next email and I will tell you how it performs:

Write your subject line. I will score it and tell you what to improve.
What it is and why it matters so much
Email marketing has existed for decades and, far from dying, remains one of the most profitable channels. Why? Because it is you own. Your email list cannot be taken away by an algorithm change, and you are not charged to reach your own contacts as you are on social networks. When someone gives you their email address, they are giving you a direct key to their attention. Used well, that key is worth gold: industry studies rank email returns among the highest in all digital marketing.
What it is for
- Selling: offers, launches and reminders for people who already know and trust you.
- Building loyalty: maintaining the relationship so customers return and remember you.
- Winning back: abandoned baskets and customers who have not bought for a while.
- Automating: welcome or follow-up sequences that work on their own.
- Adding value: useful content that establishes you as an authority, not just sales messages.
Your email list is the only marketing audience you truly own. Social networks rent you their audiences; the list belongs to you.
What makes it work
Effective email marketing rests on five things: an owned, permission-based list (no buying lists; that is illegal and does not work), segmentation (not sending everyone the same thing), a subject line that earns the open (the one in the tool above), real value in the content (not just “buy”) and consistency without overwhelming people. If you get the list or the subject line wrong, nothing else matters: the email either does not arrive or is not opened.
Mistakes that send you to spam
The classics: buying email lists (illegal under the GDPR and counterproductive), writing subject lines such as “FREE!!! LAST CHANCE” that filters spot immediately, sending only to sell without adding anything, making unsubscribing difficult and sending too frequently. Each brings you closer to the spam folder, which is very hard to escape. Email marketing is about respect: for the person who gave you permission and for their inbox.
I help you build and segment your list and send emails people open and appreciate, with automations that work for you. No spam and GDPR-compliant.
Talk about email marketingFrequently asked questions
Is email marketing spam?
Not if it is done properly. Spam is unsolicited email; legitimate email marketing is sent to people who have given permission and can unsubscribe whenever they want. The difference is consent. Buying lists or sending without permission is spam (and is illegal under the GDPR).
Do I need lots of contacts to start?
No. A small, well-segmented list of interested people is worth more than thousands of cold contacts. Better 100 people who want to read your emails than 5,000 who ignore them. Start with the customers you already have and grow the list gradually.
Which tool should I use for email marketing?
There are platforms for every level (Mailchimp, Brevo, MailerLite and similar), many offering a free plan to get started. What matters is not the tool, but having a permission-based list, segmenting it and sending content that adds value. The tool matters least.
How often should I send emails?
It depends on your business, but the rule is: only when you have something to offer. Better one good email a month than four poor ones a week. Overwhelming people is the fastest way to make them unsubscribe or mark you as spam. Quality over quantity.
Does email marketing still work in 2026?
Yes, and it remains one of the channels with the best returns. As long as people use email, it will keep working. What changes is the approach: more personalisation, more automation and more respect for the inbox. The basics do not change: permission and value.
