SEO vs AEO vs GEO: the clear differences and what you need.

Three acronyms that have been circulating on LinkedIn for months, confusing marketing directors. A quick explanation without hype: what each does, how they differ and which you should work on first in your situation.

Summary

SEO ranks your website in traditional search engines (Google, Bing). AEO makes your content appear as a direct answer (featured snippets, AI Overviews). GEO gets generative engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) to cite you as a source. They are not competitors: they are three complementary layers of visibility. The winning strategy in 2026 is to use all three in parallel, not choose one.

If you have spent some time in digital marketing, you have seen three acronyms explode over the past year: SEO, AEO and GEO. Agencies use them to differentiate themselves, marketing directors read them in confused LinkedIn posts, and everyone tells you to work on them, but few explain how they really differ.

This article is exactly that: a quick explanation without hype, with a comparison table you can save and practical examples to understand what applies to you.

The three acronyms in one sentence each

S

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation

Optimisation to rank your website in traditional search engines such as Google and Bing. It is the oldest and most established discipline, and remains the foundation of all digital visibility.

Example Someone searches Google for “seo consultant mallorca” and your website appears on the first page. That is SEO working.

A

AEO

Answer Engine Optimisation

Optimisation to make your content appear as a direct answer in answer engines: Google featured snippets, AI Overviews and voice assistants such as Alexa or Siri.

Example Someone asks Google “how many people live in Mallorca?” and a highlighted paragraph appears with the answer from your website. That is AEO working.

G

GEO

Generative Engine Optimisation

Optimisation to get your brand cited as a source in AI-generated answers: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot.

Example Someone asks ChatGPT “what are the best marketing agencies in Mallorca?” and the model mentions your brand in its answer. That is GEO working.

The comparison table you will want to save

Aspect SEO AEO GEO
Target platform Google, Bing Google snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude
Desired result Appear in the results list Be the direct answer Be cited as a source
Content format Pages optimised with keywords Concise questions and answers, structured data Comprehensive content with verifiable data
Generates direct traffic Yes (click on result) Sometimes (zero-click is common) Rarely (yes via Perplexity)
Benefits brand authority Medium High Very high
Maturity of the field 20+ years 5–7 years Emerging (1–2 years)
Competition in Spanish High Medium Still low

How all three fit into your strategy

The most useful way to understand the relationship between the three is as a pyramid. Each layer rests on the one below:

GEO Brand cited by AI in generative answers
AEO Content as a direct answer (snippets, voice)
SEO Solid foundation: website ranks in traditional search engines

SEO remains the foundation. Without a well-structured, fast and authoritative site, the other two layers cannot stand. A revealing finding from the recent AirOps study with Kevin Indig across 16,851 queries: a page ranked first on Google has a 58% probability of being cited by ChatGPT. In position 10, that figure drops to 14%. Good SEO directly supports GEO.

AEO is the middle layer, drawing on the same elements (well-structured content and verifiable data) but focusing on a question-and-answer format. GEO is the top layer, where your brand no longer competes to appear in a list, but to be remembered by a model when someone asks.

Which should you work on first?

Here is the practical question. It depends on your situation:

If your website is new or your SEO is weak

Start with SEO. Without a foundation, the other two layers do not work. Audit your site, improve speed and architecture, optimise for your main keywords and build authority. Put in 4–6 months of serious work before moving to the next layers.

If your SEO already works reasonably well

Add AEO and GEO in parallel. The good news is that many optimisations serve both: schema markup, question-and-answer format, verifiable data and clear definitions at the start. Applying them to your 10 most important pages makes a difference within weeks.

If you compete in highly saturated Google sectors

GEO is your escape route. If reaching position 1 on Google is impossible because 50 competitors have much greater authority, you can jump the queue by appearing directly in ChatGPT answers. Competition there is much lower.

Three common mistakes with these acronyms

Treating them as competitors

The most common one. “Should I do SEO or GEO?” is the wrong question. The answer is “both”. They are complementary layers, not alternatives. Anyone presenting them as a choice misunderstands how today’s ecosystem works.

Skipping SEO to “go straight to GEO”

The next most common and most expensive mistake. Generative AI models learn from the indexed web. If your site does not rank well on Google, models rarely find you. SEO remains a prerequisite for GEO to work.

Thinking AEO always generates traffic

AEO can give you enormous brand visibility without direct clicks. Appearing as a direct answer in Google means the user gets the answer without visiting your website. That is still valuable for authority, but it is not the same as ranking first with real traffic. Bear this in mind when measuring.

The winning strategy in one sentence

Do not choose between SEO, AEO and GEO. Work on them as three layers of the same strategy: SEO as the foundation, AEO as the route to immediate visibility, GEO as a medium-term competitive advantage.

The mistake is thinking they are separate disciplines requiring separate teams. They are actually the same discipline (organic visibility) applied to three types of platforms (search engines, answer engines and generative engines). The professional who masters all three is the one who wins in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Are AEO and GEO the same?

Almost, but not quite. AEO focuses on appearing as a direct answer, mainly in Google (featured snippets, AI Overviews) and voice assistants. GEO goes a step further and covers full generative engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. In practice, the techniques overlap considerably and many people use the terms interchangeably.

Will SEO disappear?

No. SEO remains the foundation on which the other layers are built. What is disappearing is SEO understood as “stuffing articles with keywords”. Modern SEO requires useful content, authority and structure, exactly the same signals you need for AEO and GEO. The three layers reinforce each other.

How much does good AEO and GEO cost?

It depends on the current state of your website. If you already have a solid SEO foundation, implementing AEO and GEO requires incremental adjustments: schema markup, rewriting key pages in a question-and-answer format and building third-party mentions. For projects starting from scratch, the initial investment is similar to a complete SEO strategy with an additional layer of generative optimisation.

How long does it take to see results?

SEO takes 4–9 months for established results. AEO takes 4–12 weeks if your site already has a foundation. With GEO, the first visible results appear in 4–8 weeks in Perplexity (which crawls in real time) and 3–6 months in ChatGPT (which updates less frequently). These timeframes are indicative: each case depends on the niche and competition.

Do I need a different specialist for each?

No. An SEO professional fully up to date in 2026 handles all three disciplines. They are so closely integrated that separating them into different teams is counterproductive: SEO decisions affect AEO, and AEO decisions affect GEO. What you do need is to make sure whoever manages your visibility understands and actively works on all three layers.

1. Do you already appear on Google for what you sell?
2. Does your customer ask specific questions that Google answers at the top?
3. Does your audience already use ChatGPT or Perplexity to make decisions?
